These peices were inspired by my years living in Southeast Asia, on the Ring of Fire, during a period marked by political, economic, and geological instability in Indonesia. The landscapes evoke the great eruptions of the past, such as the catastrophic Krakatoa eruption of 1883, as well as more recent volcanic activity. The sepia tone of the work references the historical recording of these events through etchings, paintings, and old photographs from Southeast Asia’s Dutch colonial period. While volcanoes can remain dormant for thousands of years, the potential for a sudden eruption with catastrophic consequences is always present. Yet, amidst such violence, there is a paradoxical beauty and fertility that can sustain life, offering a kind of life-giving sustenance born from destruction.
